This letter is Captain Glass’s response to Governor Vega’s letter where he declined to surrender. In this letter Captain Glass gives Governor Vega an ultimatum. We know now that if 30 minutes had passed Captain Glass was going to send his detachment of 30 Marines. The detachment did end up going ashore but that was later and to help with the surrender. After this letter Vega surrendered.
This letter is included in the series of correspondence that the Captain and the Governor engaged in prior to the US capture of the island. I picked the letter for my project because it is part of the series of correspondence between the Spanish and Americans that took place during the capture.
