About My Project

My project is about Guam in the Spanish-American War. This topic is really important for people because when we talk about the Spanish-American War we focus on Cuba and sometimes the Philippines but Guam gets left out. It is important to talk about, especially in the US, because the island’s history is very important to its indigenous population and Guam is a US territory. Looking at Guam during the war really shows how the island gets ignored, this is most likely because no battles were fought on the island. This is where my project comes in, my project really brings out what happened on the island. Looking at the Wikipedia page on the topic it was clear that a lot of small details about what happened where missing, also missing from the page was what happened in the years after the war. Both of those things are what I added to the page, what my project looks at, and what my sources are about. A lot of the primary sources that I used for my project were letters and speeches to and from officials during the war, a few of the letters are from the Governor of Guam at the time. Using sources from both sides and piecing the details together will allow me to see both sides and get a good understanding of what happened on the island. I can then share that with the world and people will get a better idea of what happened from both perspectives.
