I made a list of some discussion questions for my readers to consider as they read my sources for themselves and as they hopefully get inspired to do more work.
Discussion Questions
- How did the US capture Guam?
- What did life under US rule look like?
- What is a main disagreement between historians on this topic?
- Did the people of Guam like US rule or not and why?
- Did the majority of the US population support the war?
- How did the Spanish feel about having to give up Guam?
- Did the people of Guam like Spanish rule or US rule more?
- What do you think the US should have done differently in respect to the people of Guam? – A few of my secondary sources talk about what the US did
- Why did the US treat the people of Guam differently and/or better than other groups of people like Black people?
- Why do you think the Spanish had mostly abandoned Guam before the war began?
For my readers who would like to do their our research a tool for secondary sources is JSTOR and tool for both primary and secondary sources from the Guam perspective might be Guampedia. I think I exhausted the US Navy historical archive but one may look there for US perspective primary sources.
